I'm Tired Of Men Acting Like They Own The Gym And Other Public Spaces
By Clara VazSeptember 30, 2012
Last weekend I was at the gym, waiting for a fellow male bodybuilder to get off the pull-up bars. Yours truly can do about 7-10 wide grip pullups unassisted of which she’s very proud, and that Saturday was a heavy back day. While I’m waiting, another gym guy comes up and asks me if I’m doing just that, waiting. Why yes. Yes I am. Then: Gym guy: “Can I just get in my rep...Posted in Culture and Politics, Feminism, nfti-home, Politics, Womanhood | (0) Comments »
Body Liberation Is Bigger Than Lady Gaga
By Jenn LeyvaSeptember 30, 2012
Jenn Leyva's a big fan of Lady GaGa, but says body positive activism goes beyond the cries for help from thin, blonde women. Lady GaGa has a new Body Revolution campaign. It seems that after taking flack for gaining weight, she’s on the offensive, posting pictures of herself in her underwear with text talking about her eating disorders. She even showed up at an event in a couture fat sui...Posted in Current Events, Internet and Social Media, Life, nfti-home, Pop Culture | (0) Comments »
The Friday Five
By Role/Reboot StaffSeptember 28, 2012
This week's roundup of our favorites from across the interwebs to help you make sense of men and women. 1. Women Still Missing From Medicine’s Top Ranks by Danielle Ofri, M.D., of The New York Times says while women make up about half of all medical students and a third of academic faculty, they are nearly absent in the upper ranks. 2. On Being The Lady With The Microphone by Carole Sim...Posted in Culture and Politics, Current Events, Feminism, Friday Five, Gender Roles, Internet and Social Media, Mothers, nfti-home | (0) Comments »
Why Are People Still Baffled By My Choice To Keep My Last Name?
By AnneSeptember 27, 2012
A few days before my wedding at age 32, my father learned that I was keeping my birth name. My mother recalls the conversation as this: Father: Hmm, what’s that all about? Mother: I don’t know, I guess she just likes your name better than his. Every time I think of this I laugh because my decision not to change my name was firmly based on feminist ideology. Having my consciousness...Posted in Feminism, Gender Roles, Husbands, Life, Marriage, nfti-home, Wives | (0) Comments »
15 Things I Know About Being A Single Mom
By Katerina ZachariaSeptember 27, 2012
Katerina Zacharia offers advice to other single women with children, including how to spend your time on work trips, the best times of day to date, the types of men to avoid, and the kinds of friends to keep close. I offer this list not as an absolute. I don’t profess to have any expertise. I live by my gut, my heart, my soul, and my intellect. I am flawed. I make mistakes. I am a bit na...Posted in Dating, Life, Mothers, nfti-home, Singledom, Womanhood, Working Mothers | (0) Comments »
I Am Ugly, And I Can Be Anything
By Kate FridkisSeptember 26, 2012
Sometimes I think letting myself be ugly is one of my biggest accomplishments. Which makes it sound like I will most likely not go on to win the Nobel Prize at anything (hey, it remains to be seen—you never know). As a kid, I thought that I was gorgeous, in part because girls were always gorgeous in books and movies, so I figured that was an important part of the whole girl thing. I figu...Posted in Life, nfti-home, Womanhood | (0) Comments »
Why The Emmy's Made Me Proud To Be A Girl
By Emily Heist MossSeptember 26, 2012
Today's top female characters on television have restored Emily Heist Moss' faith in being a 21st century woman. Between the crotch-shot sharing ladies of Jersey Shore, the squabbling botox bunch of Real Housewives, the konstantly konniving Kardashians, Big Ang, Honey Boo Boo, dance moms and toddlers twirling in tiaras, you might come to the conclusion that it is a lousy time to be a lady on t...Posted in Current Events, Internet and Social Media, Life, nfti-home, Pop Culture, Reality TV, Womanhood | (0) Comments »
Expecting Parenting To Be Hard Could Make Us Happier
By Lyla CiceroSeptember 25, 2012
If we're ever going to find happiness as parents, we have to know what to expect, says therapist Lyla Cicero. Before I started graduate school, I spent several years taking courses I needed in order to apply, volunteering in clinical and research settings, talking to folks who already had doctorates, and simply thinking about whether this was what I wanted. I knew getting a doctorate would be ...Posted in Family, Fathers, Lyla, Mothers, nfti-home, Parents | (0) Comments »
I Don't Need Rock-Hard Abs To Be A Good Father And Husband
By Hugo SchwyzerSeptember 25, 2012
A former exercise addict, Hugo Schwyzer shares how he gave up marathons for fatherhood. “It’s time to go shopping for new pants,” my wife told me gently a few weeks ago. She was feeding our infant son; I was in the bathroom, getting dressed for a meeting, pulling on a favorite pair of jeans. The pants weren’t ripped or out of style—but they had grown too small for...Posted in Family, Fathers, Hugo, Husbands, Manhood, Marriage, nfti-home | (0) Comments »
Why Are Mothers And Fathers Still At A Disadvantage At Work?
By Joan Williams and Katherine UllmanSeptember 25, 2012
Is today's "ideal worker" childless? “Equal pay for equal work.” There were a series of catchphrases at this year’s Democratic National Convention, and this was a popular one. Touted by Elizabeth Warren, Michelle Obama, and the namesake of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, “equal pay for equal work” not only signified the first bill signed into law by Pres...Posted in Caregiving Fathers, Culture and Politics, Fathers, Gender Roles, Mothers, nfti-home, Parents, Politics, Working Mothers | (0) Comments »
