I have definitely fallen into the trap of believing that there are big differences between men and women in the way that they speak and use language.  This article by Yvonne Fulbright reviews the actual data and show how exaggerated our beliefs are.  What is so clear is that once we get in our minds that these differences exist, we tend to see them around us and notice those things that reinforce our assumptions.  This is not a small matter. As the article points out, misplaced assumptions cause many other detrimental stereotypes.
