Fight of The Valkeries

This NYT column by Maureen Dowd has provoked much discussion.  Is it really a gender flip that the women wanted us to get involved in Libya when the men resisted?  I think too much is made of this.  For one thing, the women all invoked humanitarian reasons for involvement while the men resisted for practical and defense strategy reasons.  One could argue that this is actually consistent with gender stereotypes.  Moreover, I believe that people in this story acted consistent with their roles without regard to gender.  The Secretary of State and Ambassador to the UN urged involvement in Libya and the Secretary of Defense and other military advisers urged caution about getting involved without clear military objectives.  The third session of Turn the Page is all about whether differences between men and are biological or whether they just reflect role differences.
