Social Conservatives Freak Out Over J. Crew Ad

So, if a boy wears pink toe polish he must be transgendered or perhaps the pink polish will cause him to be transgendered?  Crazy.

This belief and reaction has some of its roots in how we used to think about gender identity.  When I first studied child development in the early 70s people believed that when a preschool child was learning his gender identity it was best not to confuse him or her.  But even then I doubt that anyone believed nail polish was a major confusion with dire consequences.

In the past decades it has become increasingly clear that gender identity is basically inborn.  Even in an extreme case where a castrated boy was dressed as a girl and told he was a  girl, for example, the true gender emerged.  There may be confusion, but there is not a change in sexual identity.

So getting all upset about a boy with pink nail polish?  This is ignoring all science and evidence on gender.  Ignoring science?  This is hardly a surprise.
