The Friday Five

This week’s roundup of our favorites from across the interwebs to help you make sense of men and women.

1. Why The GOP Can’t Win Over The Single Ladies by Hanna Rosin of Slate.com says for weeks before the convention we’d been hearing about how Mitt Romney was set to endear himself to women and especially single women. But now that the ceremony is underway, the Republicans can barely bring themselves to admit that the brand of single woman they need to win over even exists.

2. Men, Who Needs Them? by Greg Hampikian of The New York Times says women are both necessary and sufficient for reproduction; men are neither.

3. Anti-Obesity: The New Homophobia? by Paul Campos of Salon.com says telling fat people they ought to be thin is about as helpful as telling gay people they should be straight.

4. Should You Marry Your High-School Sweetheart? by Brian Palmer of Slate.com says marrying young is one of the most reliable predictors of divorce, especially for women, but it worked for Mitt and Ann Romney.

5. The Quiet Racism Of Abortion Bans by Brian Fung of The Atlantic says like prohibitions on other goods and services, an abortion ban of the kind national conservatives propose would take a disproportionate toll on those least equipped to adapt, and would advance little but ideology.
