The Friday Five

This week’s roundup of our favorites from across the interwebs to help you make sense of men and women.

1. How Can We Help Men? By Helping Women by Stephanie Coontz of The New York Times says the most urgent issue facing working Americans today is not the glass ceiling. It is the sinking floor. So wouldn’t it make more sense to focus on gender-neutral economic policies?

2. Jared Leto And Michael Douglas’ Homophobic Golden Globes Speeches Show The Worst Of Hollywood by Daniel D’Addario of Salon says the Dallas Buyers Club and Behind The Candelabra stars get awkward laughs at gay folks expense.

3. The Next Frontier In Fertility Treatments by Sarah Elizabeth Richards of The New York Times says transgender men and women have the right to be parents, too.

4. The Advice Every Single Woman Gets On Her 30th Birthday by Megan Greenwell of Slate says: “Usually, their words of wisdom boil down to ‘don’t panic about finding a man.’ But what they really mean is, ‘don’t panic about finding a man yet.’”

5. Wealthy Women Can Afford To Reject Marriage, But Poor Women Can’t by Emma Green of The Atlantic says higher-income “single ladies” often push back against patriarchy. But low-income, unmarried women face significant economic challenges when they stay single. (We don’t agree with everything in this piece, but it’s generating some debate.)
